In a creepy episode revealed in his journal, Foos followed one of his occupants home, and questioned a neighbor at her apartment complex. And we learn that Talese, for all their superficial differences, identifies with Foos. Or rather, that what he thought was a friendship was, in fact, nothing more than a transactional relationship governed by a single motivation: the story. Meanwhile, the film also captures Talese's reckoning with his own motivations, and his ability to compartmentalize Foos into the box of "subject" in a whatever-it-takes approach to get the story. Other documentaries feel so tame after the dumpster fire flamboyance of Tiger King. But this case is categorically different: Foos story is not a matter of great public interest; sticking with him in the hopes of one day blowing the lid off some institutional failure was never the point.
